I think Science is genuinely...I don't think so. I think Science is genuinely doing a bad job. Of course Science isn't set up to provide rapid-reaction reports. But I think people like Imperial - and not just them - are still in publish-or-perish mentality: yes, there's an epidemic on, but for them as for all high-pressure scientists the #1 preoccupation is paper count / citation count / being noticed. Here in the USA, we are certainly suffering because Trump's government wants to put a very different spin on things that the scientists would. The whole goal of our government is to sow confusion in the hopes that any sense of responsibility the public might attach to Trump's government can be sloughed off.
